God always has the power to help you overcome
So much is happening in this world and the struggle to survive is getting more difficult. Everyone has been affected in some way by the economy as jobs are scarce and homes are being foreclosed on daily. The increase of broken marriages is staggering even among Christians. And it seems like so many health issues are affecting people everywhere. Though prayers are being offered, some may wonder if God’s power is enough to take us through.
The Apostle Paul said in 2 Timothy 1:12, “For I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that he is able to guard that which I give to him for this day“. That was a powerful statement coming from a man who in his lifetime was beaten, stoned, homeless and imprisoned. How could such faith come from Paul in the midst of all that he had to endure? It seems like God should have made Paul’s life a little easier since he was entrusted with bringing the good news of Christ to the lost. But God’s ways are higher.
The truth lies in the fact that Paul intimately KNEW the God he served. He was confident that he could have peace in his blessings as well as his trials. He understood that in all things, God was working out a perfect plan that would strengthen Paul in this life and earn him reward in heaven. The reality was that God had a purpose in using all that came against Paul to further his kingdom as he transformed Paul into the image of Christ. Paul was ready for the day when he would meet his Savior face to face. For that reason he believed that to die was gain and to go on living was for Christ. Paul was ready to do whatever was asked of him.
The grace that you need to face all of the challenges in your life as a believer is living in you! There is now no mountain of trouble and no sea of tears that can stop you from living an abundant life in Christ Jesus. The enemy can’t do anything to you that God knows will destroy you. You can’t lose the battle when the power of Christ is your force and your strength. You must always remember that God knows your struggles and your pain. It was by his will that you were created and by his word he spoke the universe into existence. There is nothing hidden from the all-knowing, all present God.
God will always be sovereign over all that you go through. In the book of Job, we read that Satan had to first ask permission to come against Job. Satan wanted to destroy Job but God knew that the testing was only going to make Job stronger in his faith and more blessed than before. He knew his power would be more than enough for Job to overcome all of the enemy’s attacks. Do you not know that the same is true for you and in your circumstance? The wind, the waves and every storm and battle that you face must first come before Christ who allows only that which he will cause to be used for your good despite how painful it seems now. Beloved, for that reason you must never give up. Your God is working out blessings in your life that you can’t even imagine! You may feel weak, but God will keep you from sinking if you will just keep your eyes on him.
In my own life, I am experiencing a struggle that is causing me much pain. There are times I also feel overwhelmed and weakened from the battle that never seems to end. It is difficult some mornings for me to just get out of bed. Yet in my heart, I know the God whom I have believed. I can trust through all things that God will not fail me. I may not see or feel him working out my problem, but I know that he is. When I get weary, I turn to his word and seek his strength. I have purposed in my heart to keep my trust in Christ no matter how dark the storm gets. Sometimes I write these posts through my tears. It is difficult but I know my Redeemer lives! He has taken me too far for me to give up now. Each day I grow in the strength that he gives me. All that I am going through has a purpose that God has designed and that he will work out in his perfect way.
It is my prayer that if you are in a difficult situation that you will give your pain to the One who paid the price to give you a future with hope. Jesus overcame all of our enemies and all of our problems by his death on the cross. There is nothing can can hold you in bondage if you will trust that God is bigger. I will be praying with you.
Dear Lord, there is so much darkness in this world and we are all struggling to stay in the battle. I pray for all of those who are just too weary to pray and who feel that you have given up on them. I stand in the gap for those who are hurting and I pray that you will lead them to your perfect peace. Let them feel your presence as you give them the knowledge that nothing will stop your plan and the future that you have ordained for them. You are more than able to guard all the pain and struggles that we give to you for this day. Open their eyes to see that you already have them surrounded by your angels who are greater than the troubles that come against them. Please give them an understanding of your enduring love. Amen

Good evening. What a timely post. We let circumstances rule over us when we unwittingly forget that “if God be for us than who can be against us?” There are times when things here seem to pile on and I have to just stop in my tracks and cry out “Lord please let me see this situation as you see it because right now it’s about to drive me nutty.” It’s amazing how even a few moments with the Lord can result in a complete attitude adjustment.
It’s why I love Psalm 46:10 so much. “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” The title of this post is a most timely admonition. Thanks.
Blessings always in Jesus name.

Thank you Marianne, you have delivered God’s message of peace, calmness, love and His assurance of victory. I was about to pray when again i stumble upon your reflection on God’s presence in our lives. Marianne, you’re testimony really lead me to his teaching. It is during moments of pain and struggle that we gain strength, I can pray for others powerfully without doubt that God will answer their prayers. It is at this time of abandonment that the presence of God comes in. He is telling me now through your message that my problems were His and I just have to carry His task. Yes, I now understand why I can’t feel Him in my difficulties, as if he doesn’t care. His plans are greater than my problems – it is during these times that I must decrease and He increases in my life. a few hours from now, will no longer be my challenging times – I am leaving it ALL to Him at the foot of His cross. Tomorrow, He will not let me cause pain to others – I claim for his promise and I know my rent will be paid by Him and my bills he will instruct, guide and supply me the means. Jesus You’re All that I need – Jesus I trust in your Divinity and Mercy.

Hi Zet, I am so happy that you are walking in God’s peace at this time of trial in your life. The good thing is that you know that although you cannot see what he is doing to help, you KNOW that his with you and that he will eventually work this out. God can do great works through a person who has surrenedered all their fears to him. We always have to wait on God’s timing and understand this his ways are higher and better than ours. I pray that God will put the right people in your path to help guide you in your financial troubles. As I have told you before, I also had financial problems that I thought were going to destroy me. But God knew the ways and the paths to lead me on. He lifted me up in due time and helped me overcome this difficulty. If you believe that he loves you, Zet, you must believe that he will not let you go under! He has a way. Wait on him for he will not fail. I am still praying for you! God bless you with his peace.

Marianne . . . God’s work in our lives is perfect. Everything is for a reason and foundational to all reasons is to draw us closer to Him. I’ve learned to seek the lesson in all I go through, something I never use to do. I would ask for help for deliverance, but never really sought what is God trying to teach me by getting my attention with this trial? When I truly seek then God shows me in time and deliverance soon follows. I don’t believe God wants us to remain in trials – I think they come to push us to push into Him and His truth – at least this is what I have found in my own life.
Our life work or expereinces aren’t only to reach others but to refine us and draw us closer to God – we can see both in Paul’s life. God knew exactly what circumstances Paul needed to be molded into who God wanted him to be and along the way he God used him in an incredible way to touch the lives of others.
I am praying for you in your trial. May you push into Him in truth and be delivered in a mighty way.

I really appreciate you words of wisdom, Rachel, and they are well taken. What you have said is so very true and I do know it. Sometimes I grow weary but I know, as you have also said, that God is working something far greater out in my life. In the past, I just wanted the trial to go away at any cost. Now I am waiting upon God. He has the solution to my problem and he will reward the faith that I have in him. I will trust his timing.
I am so grateful for your prayers! That means so much to me. You are a true friend.

Marianne – thank you for a wonderful post. There is no greater joy than that of KNOWING Christ Jesus! He is the great treasure we have and He is the source of the infinite living water that quenches our needs and fills our hearts. Let us remember the words of Romans 12:12, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
Perseverance in our affliction is so important. Romans 5:3-5 says, “we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Rachel’s comment was absolutely right – we really do need to spend special time, while praying, to figure out the purpose of our suffering and what God wants to teach us with it. It builds up our character and our hope – we must surely know, how God intends to do this!
I am amazed at how God is working through your blog to bring encouragement and hope to people reading it! Praise God for His gift of fellowship through the internet. I too like the others find this post timely – despite being criticized by my friends and my parents for my Christian faith, I can rejoice, because I KNOW my Lord!
Once again – amazingly, our blog posts coincide – I’ve written a post on the sovereignty of God in giving us joy in Him – please check it out if you have time!
I’ll be sure to pray for you and for all the others who are indeed hurting in this painful time.
God bless!

Just wanted you to know that I’ve been praying for you a lot since yesterday. I feel the spiritual warfare is strong and is growing in strength. Marianne, as always, I was greatly encouraged by reading your post. It touched my heart to know that you are experiencing a struggle that brings you such discomfort. Never, never doubt Jesus, and know this; the longer and harder the battle, the greater and sweeter the victory. You will sometimes become recipient of victories that you will never realize the magnitude of those victories this side of Heaven.
You are a treasure not to be taken lightly in that which you do for Christ. I join with others in lifting you in prayer, not knowing your affliction, but Jesus does. I wish to share with you something that I pulled from among my writings as a pastor.
SERVING IN THE SHADOWS
After decades of service to the church, I have witnessed many pastoral changes. Some of the changes were due to retirement of the presiding pastor. Those changes of the guard were usually accompanied with parties and gifts for the departing shepherd plus a feeling of sweet sorrow to be remembered at some future time. There were the others; there’s always the others. Those are the ones where the church and the pastor simply fall out of love one for the other. When pastors leave with work still undone, questions are sure to huant congregations for weeks, months, and oftentimes, even for years. All too often, those questions lead to the detriment of the church body.
Congregations usually have a great appreciation for pastors with charisma and a positive attitude. Likewise, pastors enjoy shepherding congregations where they have a feeling of being appreciated. In those situations of mutual appreciativeness, problems are easily overcome when pastors and board members work together, reason being; board members try to avert bored members. In the aforementioned situation, church growth is almost sure to happen, and as growth continues, so does the love affair between cleric and church. It is from a relationship such as this that the most noteworthy pastors emerge.
I have found one thing to be consistent with each and ever established believer, and that is a varying degree of knowledge of scripture. Within this knowledge lies the ability to compare each minister of the gospel to some outstanding character in the bible. Probably the most visible, the most interesting, and the most imitated preacher in all scripture is the Apostle Paul. Other than the obvious, what was the circumstance that brought forth this legendary Apostle of such colossal stature?
To fully appreciate the mystery of the developement of the Apostle Paul, we must first realize that he did not originate within the pulpit of some prestigious church. Galations 1; 15-17 tells us, “BUT WHEN IT PLEASED GOD, WHO SEPARATED ME FROM MY MOTHER’S WOMB, AND CALLED ME BY HIS GRACE, TO REVEAL HIS SON IN ME, THAT I MIGHT PREACH HIM AMONG THE HEATHEN; IMMEDIATELY I CONFERRED NOT WITH FLESH AND BLOOD; NEITHER WENT I UP TO JERUSALEM TO THEM WHICH WERE APOSTLES BEFORE ME; BUT I WENT INTO ARABIA, AND RETURNED AGAIN UNTO DAMASCUS.”
From these words we can see the solitude of Paul and conclude that though this was the preparation of the Apostle, it certainly wasn’t the catalyst of his fame. Seeing that it wasn’t the pulpit, neither the preparation that accounts for the overwhelming magnitude of the ministry of Paul, let us look at another area of his life.
Chapter 27 of the Acts of the Apostles, verse 15 through 22 gives some of the greatest insight into the making of a great pastor that we shall ever behold. “AND WHEN THE SHIP WAS CAUGHT, AND COULD NOT BEAR UP INTO THE WIND, WE LET HER DRIVE. AND RUNNING UNDER A CERTAIN ISLAND WHICH IS CALLED CLAUDA, WE HAD MUCH WORK TO COME BY THE BOAT. WHICH WHEN THEY HAD TAKEN UP, THEY USED HELPS, UNDER GIRDING THE SHIP; AND, FEARING LEST THEY SHOULD FALL INTO THE QUICKSANDS, STRAKE SAIL, AND SO WERE DRIVEN. AND WE BEING EXCEEDINGLY TOSSED WITH A TEMPEST. THE NEXT DAY THEY LIGHTENED THE SHIP; AND THE THIRD DAY WE CAST OUT WITH OUR HANDS THE TACKLING OF THE SHIP. AND WHEN NEITHER SUN NOR STARS IN MANY DAYS APPEARED, AND NO SMALL TEMPEST LAY ON US, ALL HOPE THAT WE SHOULD BE SAVED WAS THEN TAKEN AWAY. BUT AFTER LONG ABSTINENCE PAUL STOOD FORTH IN THE MIDST OF THEM, AND SAID, SIRS, YE SHOULD HAVE HEARKENED UNTO ME, AND NOT HAVE LOOSED FROM CRETE, AND TO HAVE GAINED THIS HARM AND LOSS. AND NOW, I EXHORT YOU TO BE OF GOOD CHEER: FOR THERE SHALL BE NO LOSS OF ANY MAN’S LIFE AMONG YOU, BUT OF THE SHIP.”
I finished the select reading in preparation for my sermon. Leaving the bible open to the text, I lay it across my chest and closed my eyes.
Coming into the room where I lay in deep meditation on the sofa, my wife asked the obvious question. “Are you asleep; I thought you were supposed to be studying?”
“I’m studying,” I replied, as I continued to try placing myself on the storm tossed ship, surrounded by men bent on my distruction. The method of study is one that I have found to be quite effective for myself.
In my minds eye, I can see the Apostle Paul. I can feel the wintry wind as the cold bites into his flesh. I can almost taste the spray from the water that refuses to stay beneath the small ship, but insists on coming aboard with the terrified crew, driving them ever closer to a watery grave. I watch as Paul joins the crew in casting out the tackling of the ship. All total, there are two hundred and seventy six people abord the tiny vessel, but only one stands out above the rest…the Apostle Paul.
My mind is racing now as I see another, not quite as prominent as Paul, but he too works feverishly to save the vessel. He doesn’t look up from the task at hand as the storm rages on. How easy it is to lose sight of that individual as I continue to focus my attention upon Paul. After Paul has spoken to the crew, admonishing them to be of good cheer, I look for the other passenger that had caught my attention. I see him now crouching in the shadows. I watch as he pulls a piece of parchment from beneath his cloak. Lovingly, he protects the parchment from the elements and the storm as he begins to write.
It wasn’t a conscious decision that I made, but suddenly my attention has shifted from Paul to this shadowy figure of the sea. The mystery passenger doesn’t see me as I begin to scrutinize his exixtence. How could he, for though his pain is agonizingly real, his fear of drowning in the cruel sea is eminent, I am observing his plight from roughly two thousand years in the distant future. As he lifts his gaze from the parchment to look upo his friend Paul, I see his face. My breath catches in my throat and I feel my heart begin to pound as I recognize him.
The words from that soggy piece of parchment have now been copied onto the finest quality paper known to man. The pages have been bound and sown together and rest between top grain leather, so as to now grace nightstands and coffee tables throughout the world. Few people will ever appreciate just how skillful the writing of the mystery man of the sea really is. On every Lord’s Day that passes, thousands of Sunday School classrooms and pulpits are privileged to read from those writings and see only the Apostle Paul, for that was the writers intent. As for myself, I feel a heightening sense of admiration for Luke, the Beloved Physician, author of the Book of Acts, Pauls traveling companion on the treacherous journey to Rome.
I have been honored to speak at many churches throughout Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and a few of the southern states. I have been called upon to serve as guest speaker at pastor appreciation services honoring affluent pastors. Sucessful pastors are easily recognized and readily picked out in the crowds. Words of praise are easily found to honor those sucessful pastors.
Songs have been written about the church in the wildwood. While the small church is being applauded as historical landmarks as those in Cades Cove Tennessee, massive church buildings with enormous congregations are ever on the increase. Those small churches may never have had a pastor like Paul; for the fortunate others, it is likely because of people like Luke….serving in the shadows.
I realize that this is a lot of writing as a comment, but I thought it might bring you some comfort even as you comfort others. We readers fail to see the hurt of the writer, but be assured that God will eventually open our eyes; sometimes it just takes awhile. God Bless You Abundantly.

Rev. York, what an awesome testimony and a powerful message that you just gave! I always search your site for wisdom on biblical matters and now you have brought it here! I understand very well all that you have said. As you wrote, I also was going back to those waters and seeing Paul facing those fierce waves and heavy storm and yet knowing that his God was bigger!!! He knew that God was sending him to Rome and he probably understood that the enemy was trying to prevent it. And you are right in your focus of Luke. How magnificent you detailed it! Yes Luke was accompanying Paul and the wind and waves just gave him the background for writing of the power of God to save them!
The trial in my life right now can’t destroy me, it can only accomplish what God intends. I do appreciate prayers because I grow weary at times. But I know that God has a plan much bigger than I can imagine and I will stand in this battle and when it is done, I will stand!
God bless you for your prayers and for just being a friend! You are a treasure!

Very nice post Marianne, the fact that the God in whom we have believed is able to keep us… are the most encouraging words the believer shall ever lay hold to.
As I was reading your post I was thinking of Paul’s unwavering trust and commitment that we see evident in his life, especially in the times of trials and uncertainty. I am thinking it had something to do with the grip on earthly and temporal things… he held them so loosely that he was ready to let them go and go to be with the Lord… to live is Christ, to die is gain.
So many today have such a grip on earthly and material possessions that God would even struggle to pry them from our hands. When a man or a woman comes to the realization that our life is but a vapor, here today and gone tomorrow, one would do well to keep a soft grip on the things of the world in order that we might hold fast to our Lord as we step from time into eternity .
The faithfulness that we find in God and His word is sufficient to sustain us until He calls us home. I pray our Lord will hear you cry and meet your need according to His perfect will. He is faithful.
Blessings

Thank you for this post and for sharing. Your post ministered to me. While I have many blessings in my life, and I know that others suffer situations much more painful than I do, nonetheless I too am going through a trial. The Lord is teaching me to call upon Him when I am overwhelmed, and He is always faithful to answer. I am amazed when the Lord answers while I am still praying and brings peace to my heart. This happened only this morning. May all believers be encouraged, and know that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1

Thank you for visiting my site. Your encouraging post above reminded me of the common expression we use for someone who appears to be defeated, when we say he is “down for the count.”
The Bible, however, says that Christians – even when the powerful punches of life are landing relentlessly – are not “counted out.” Instead, they are counted “up” (happy) if they endure. “Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.” (James 5:11)
Faith is not blindly grabbing for rewards. True faith is obeying the Lord in spite of consequences, and enduring – like Job did – by depending on His grace, His time, and His Word.

Greetings Marianne, the Lord put a series of messages on my heart ‘The Invincible Will of God’ I was thinking on something that Jeremiah said to the Lord and the Lord’s response to him….
Jeremiah 32:17 Jeremiah prayed and made the statement…. “Ah Lord God! behold thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm and there is nothing too hard for thee”..
Imagine the God that made the heaven and the earth, and they are completely at His beckoning. He can even still the storm in the midst of the tempest. “Peace be still”.
The Lord answered Jeremiah… vs.27- “Behold I am the Lord the God of all flesh, is there anything too hard for me?”
He has His way in the whirlwind and the storm. The earth quakes at His presence and He sends or withholds the rain, so that the earth drys up and perishes. Who can stand before His indignation. Even the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord. He turneth it (the heart of the king) whither soever He willeth.
Man is not in control but God is! Words of encouragement in this day and hour we are living. Praise to Him!
Peace my sister-

Brother Malachi, I am thrilled at the message that God has put on your heart! At the root of the enemy gaining ground in his quest to destroy this world is the fact that we have Christians, who in the midst of their storm, can’t trust that God can do something to help them! That is incredible when you know that we are talking about our God who breathed into the dust and formed man! He is the Creator who SPOKE the universe into existence! He held back the sun for Joshua; he parted the sea for Moses; and healed the sick and brought back the dead. Yet we have these struggles in our lives and the enemy is actually able to convince us that there is nothing that God or anyone can do for us! Such blasphemy we give to God. The message must be given on the truth of the power of God and his workings.
I will be watching for your teachings on this subject. I thank God that he gave his word to a faithful follower as you! Bless you sir!

How true! I couldn’t help but think of when Jesus said in the end people would say “Lord, look what we’ve done in Your name.” Jesus will then reply, “…I never knew you.” Through all of the pleasures and the pain, we must not forget to “know” him. Pain and pleasure can take us in different directions but it’s about knowing Him through it all. Thanks M!

People around me cringe at the things I have endured, but don’t realize the intimacy that is found when you go to the Father and not justify your need to satisfy your soul. Reading your writings (as I will over and over) reminded me this day all satan has is the lie and we know he is the father of them! Thank you for your heart and your writings. Thank God for you sister! I really don’t have anything profound to say except I get it, I really do. You will be in my prayers for now.Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

God cares for you, Matthew, and he knows what your are going through. Keep your eyes on Christ and let his peace fill your heart. He is not going to let anything steal the future he planned for you. Read your bible everyday so you can know the truth of Gos’s promises for you.
Stop back, Matthew, let me know how you are doing.

I am very thankful to get to the title”KNOW WHOM YOU HAVE BELIEVED”.For me it is a BREAKTHROUGH for every christian and ministry.I already see God’s great manifestation as I’m having a two weeks crusade in a rural area around Limpopo(Polokwane) beginning on the 29th July-10th Aug 2013 which will be held as an OPEN AIR CRUSADE,reason being I can’t aford to hire a tent as I used to whenever I do the preaching of the Gospel. I’m working as a taxi driver in Tembisa(Gauteng) and married with three boys.Every chance I get, I use it for God,s glory and believe God for provision as I am going full-time in a ministry by next year and no more turning back.My prayer request:”Pray for what God has placed in me not to be born prematurely (HN17:4)Keep the good work God has inversted in you and get to the finish line.Stay blessed.Name of the Ministry:LORD JESUS FOR ALL MINISTRIES,Cont:Pastor FM Mashamaite,Cell:076 174 7825,email:franzmas@ovi.com

Hi Pastor, I am praying for you and your ministry. Whatever God sends you on, he will equip you to be victorious. Keep praying and allowing God to speak to your heart. He will direct your steps as you seek him in his word. You have the heart for Christ. I know you will touch the lives of so many for Christ.
God bless you, my friend.

Anonymous, I pray that you are holding on in faith. My friend, we all go through periods when it seems like God is silent. Stay focused on the truth and let his peace fill you for you know that God has a perfect plan in everything that we endure. I am praying for you, my friend. Keep trusting in faith and remember that God’s love for you will always take you through to victory.
